espite the record-breaking heat of the summer, we’re already beginning to feel a chill in the air. And as we edge closer to autumn, the threat of rain seems ever more present. Time, then, to dig out your wellies and waterproof jackets and dust off that festival mud – or, if that sounds like too much effort, invest in a shiny new raincoat to see you through the wet season ahead.
A few things to keep in mind as you shop: first, you’ll want to ensure your new waterproof jacket is actually, well, waterproof. Ideally, it should be made from fabrics such as Gore-Tex, polyester and nylon. Sure, cotton gabardine looks great, but it won’t always keep you dry in the event of a biblical downpour. Secondly, as you’ll most likely be reaching for your waterproof jacket on the regular between the months of September and June, you’re better off plumping for something that will go with your existing wardrobe. In this case, neutral colours and pared-back prints will work in your favour, but if you’re the type of woman to make a statement with your outerwear, there are, of course, many colourful and patterned options to see you through. Finally, is your waterproof jacket breathable? We don’t necessarily associate the cold and wet months with overheating, but when you’re wrapped up in that many layers, a few well-placed vents go a long way.
