espite the record-breaking heat of the summer, we’re already beginning to feel a chill in the air. And as we edge closer to autumn, the threat of rain seems ever more present. Time, then, to dig out your wellies and waterproof jackets and dust off that festival mud – or, if that sounds like too much effort, invest in a shiny new raincoat to see you through the wet season ahead.

A few things to keep in mind as you shop: first, you’ll want to ensure your new waterproof jacket is actually, well, waterproof. Ideally, it should be made from fabrics such as Gore-Tex, polyester and nylon. Sure, cotton gabardine looks great, but it won’t always keep you dry in the event of a biblical downpour. Secondly, as you’ll most likely be reaching for your waterproof jacket on the regular between the months of September and June, you’re better off plumping for something that will go with your existing wardrobe. In this case, neutral colours and pared-back prints will work in your favour, but if you’re the type of woman to make a statement with your outerwear, there are, of course, many colourful and patterned options to see you through. Finally, is your waterproof jacket breathable? We don’t necessarily associate the cold and wet months with overheating, but when you’re wrapped up in that many layers, a few well-placed vents go a long way.

Here’s our pick of the best women’s waterproof jackets to keep you dry through light showers and torrential downpours…

If there’s one brand you can always rely on to keep you warm and dry, it’s Icelandic outfitter 66°North, and having been in the business for almost a century, it’s safe to say the B Corp-certified brand knows its stuff. Named for the most remote corner of Iceland, the Hornstrandir is 66°North’s most advanced shell jacket. Crafted from Gore-Tex, with waterproof stretch panels for comfort and ease of movement, this waterproof jacket is both sturdy and graceful – it’ll also do you well on the slopes once ski season rolls around.

Crafted from 100 per cent recycled polyester and polyamide Gore-Tex, this waterproof jacket from Adidas by Stella McCartney protects the planet and protects you from the elements. Rendered in a muted cloud grey and tailored for a loose, laidback fit, it features an adjustable bungee drawcord hood and double-layered visor, adjustable cuffs and hems, and multiple zipped pockets to keep your valuables safe and dry.

We get it, sometimes you want to make a statement with your raincoat and that’s OK. Considering it only gets taken out of the house on the dreariest of days, why not opt for a waterproof jacket that will brighten up your rainy day look? Ganni’s pretty pink anorak is ideal whether you’re dashing through the wet streets of the capital, or dancing the night away at a music festival. Designed for an oversized fit, it features a drawstring hem and lace-up mock turtleneck for extra protection.

Ideal for muggy days when clouds threaten to open at any moment, Moncler’s ultra-light waterproof parka, in a seasonal tropical print, is a stylish summer staple. Complete with a detachable hood, this nylon jacket features both zip and snap button closures, a secure flap pocket and a grosgrain drawstring at the waist for a sharper fit.

If there’s anyone who understands the need to stay ahead of the weather better than Londoners, it’s our neighbours in Amsterdam. Accordingly, Scotch & Soda has released its trans-seasonal, unisex Amsterdam Proof capsule collection, featuring a range of weather-proof jackets designed for keeping the elements at bay. This waterproof rain poncho combines fashion and function with its contemporary check design, oversized fit and chest zip pocket. Lightweight and windproof, it's ideal for toting around with you on the off chance you get caught in a surprise shower.

Despite their undisputed functionality, anoraks have too often been shunned by the perenially stylish, written-off as a style for stuffy old men and nerdy school kids – but this shell anorak by New York-based label Tibi has thoroughly proved the stereotype wrong. Rendered in bright white and designed for a laidback fit, featuring extra large cargo pockets, a curved high-low hem and adjustable drawstrings, this is one anorak we’d be happy to reach for at even the slightest hint of rain.
